I Miss Shovelware Games
Sometimes even bad things can be good... right? There's no shame in admitting you bought shovelware once before, we all did. Mostly when we were young and didn't know better... So today I just wanted to talk a bit about it!

    Is this not the kind of games that end up on Playstation Plus or Xbox Game Pass? Not small enough to be "indie asset flips" as you describe, not loving enough to be "true indie" games, but stuff within the realms of single-A games? Really I think what you're missing is the janky PS2 aesthetic. Bad games nowadays still look basically decent because tech has advanced far enough that if you're reasonably moderate with your goals you can make a functional product. Obviously it's not going to look as good as AAA stuff but it's much easier to make a passable-looking game that doesn't fall into the uncanny valley.

    • @Vanserchan
      @Vanserchan 19 часов назад

      Yeah, I could have explained that point a bit more! In the end I would most likely just also chalk it up to nostalgia like I said. I "know" that shovelware still exists and just changed like that but it just doesn't feel the same because of it.

    oh my god when you whipped out the phoenix games list and i made eye contact with g-force i felt so vindicated, only to find out it was a COMPLETELY different g-force from the one i remember playing! mine was a licensed game from the movie of the same name (the one about spy guinea pigs) and of all the weird branded shovelware video games i've played that one is the one i remember the most... glad to see that the 'random pile of bargain bin video games' is universal because i have sooo many memories of wanting a cool game and having to settle for like shrek 2 for the gamecube ...

    Well... that's the side effect of gaming becoming such a big business nowadays. Publishing lots of cheap games isn't sustainable anymore because... well, gamedev got pricier and takes longer, even for shovelware. As for the statement about digital only shovelware not being shovelware... I don't know, for me Shovelware was always a game made cheaply to trick some unsuspecting people (mostly parents) to buy it. They were bad but they were cheap and easily available. Does a game needs to be made by multiple people to be shovelware? Not really? But there are smaller studios that make TRUE digital shovelware. You just have to look for it. I always seen various budget series (like Simple 2000). Are they all bad? No. They were just... extremely low budget. But hey, Global Defense Force was a part of this series and it was great! There were many games in these cheap series that are quite valid for their lower price. But yeah, I miss the golden years of shovelware too. I mean... I still can go to the Internet auction site and look at different PS1 or PS2 game and find games I've never heard about that look extremely trash and cheap, buy them and enjoy them (to some degree). Sure, we have little nightmares like games published by Midas or developed by Data Design Interactive... but at least they are interesting conversation pieces now? I would HATE to get one of them back then, but now I definitely can tolerate trash more. I don't know, I just tend do see flickers of care even in the biggest trash heap. And hey, they still are physical versions of shovelware for modern consoles (at least for PS4, PS5 and Switch). There's a lot less of them though. ...I miss bargain bins in super markets. Eh.

    • @Vanserchan
      @Vanserchan День назад

      I played a couple of the Simple 2000 games (OneeChanbara started with them and it's one of my guilty pleasure series) and while I sadly never really warmed up with the Earth Defense Force games I kinda liked the game the same devs made for the Wii, Zangeki no Reginleiv. Mostly because I like the setting of it more. I also kinda hate the giant insect enemies they usually have (despite liking them IRL but there they're not... giant) so it helped that the Wii game has more normal enemies and not TOO many big critters. Yeah, it's easier to stomach getting bad games now, since... you got more money than when you were a kid (At least I hope so). Helps when you are basically not forced to play it because it's gonna be your only new game for a while... Like I said shovelware never truly left but it's just one of those mind things where back then it felt... funnier somehow? Not totally sure how to put it into words but now when there's a lame asset flip game it's just "Oh yeah, that's just another lame asset flip game" but seeing some of the older shovelware just kinda makes me smile when I see how bad some of them are. Not to say some newer shovelware also can't be funny. Last time I went to a store that had video games there was obviously still some shovelware, but 90% of it was pretty much stuff for kids while back in the day it felt shovelware was aiming for all kinds of age groups. Which just doesn't work anymore now when there's the internet really...

    Shoverware games are the most fun when they are so terrible that they become great. X-Men Destiny were a terrible action platformer but had a large enough soul by the heavily crunched dev team that it was a fun weekend exploring everything in the game. Similarly so with Harry Potter: Quidditch World Cup were bad to play but charming enough to be a fun nostalgic memory. Actually, nearly all of the Harry Potter games feel like shovelware. Nowdays I get my Shovelware fill by buying Mystery Steam Key bundles. So many horrendous games have been added by these bundles but some gems I'd likely never find on my own. I'm Not A Monster First Contact was a intresting mix of Xcom like gameplay that look and feel like some old Sci fi B movies.

    • @Vanserchan
      @Vanserchan День назад

      Some of the earlier Harry Potter games were actually pretty good games, at least the ones I played on the PS1 and I wasn't even a Harry Potter fan! Maybe that's nostalgia though since I haven't played them in such a long time... And they always confused me since the PS1 version is like a totally different game than the PC version or then also the Gamecube version... I always wanted to buy some of those mystery bundles but I just know that it will be a waste of money, even if they only cost like... 5€...

    Can't say I've heard of this game before. Looks quite innovating for its time. A PS1 Horror game I remember trying but never got far as I never understood what happened or were said as a young 10-11 year old. Resident Evil Survivor (Biohazard Gun Survivor) were a lightgun PS1 game that you explored some island near Racoon City after they missiled the city. That's as much I know but the cover art always stuck with me, especially compared to the US and JP featuring the main character. The EU one? Gun. Straight up pistol and some bullets. Interestingly enough, the 3rd game of the Survivor spinnoff games were not a Resident Evil game but a Dino Crisis game.

      Normally I would expect the American boxart to just be a gun and some bullets... I think I watched the AVGN on the game once and it didn't even look that bad, and as a kid I always wanted to have a lightgun but never got one... Looked up some gameplay of the Dino Crisis one and now I really wanna play it!

    First of all, Nia looks lovely in Kairi's outfit. Secondly... German gamer, Digimon World, bug... I think I might be familiar with this story... and how I'm a lucky PAL region fella for being a Brit. 0:13 - Tetris is an even poorer example with the recent story (it was this year right?) of the kid who beat one of the seemingly unbeatable versions of Tetris. 0:40 - I adored Digimon World as a kid... but as someone with the UK version, I had no idea about this bug other PAL region players were suffering from. 1:57 - Wouldn't Ladydevimon have been a more befitting example here? Ah well, nice art of Angewoman... who I don't recall being in Digimon World 1. 2:51 - Hmm, but why do these bugs exist? I assume the Japanese version would have been the first made and thus the most likely to have bugs but they are popping up in these latter, translated versions? Perhaps the change of language messed with how some of the code was assigned? 3:21 - It's certainly not beginner friendly and yet Digimon World feels like a natural advanced evolution of the tamagotchi formula that Digimon came from. 5:45 - That sounds insane... but I believe there might be some logic to it. It'd be cool to see such a trick in action but I'd be terrified of potentially harming the console or disk to ever try it. 8:12 - I never used a guide for progressing... but I always used a guide for the Digivolutions. I didn't have the internet as a kid but somehow my oldest brother got given a sheet listing all of the digivolutions... with only a few inaccuracies.

    Darn, really great video about something that is really close to my heart, as I'm from a neighbouring country and most of the games popular in (and from) Germany were really popular here too. Gothic series has INCREDIBLY big following and is considered a true classic (both for its memetic aspects and pretty much the rest of it). It's a really great series, and the third installment (even when it... wasn't what the predecessors were) was considered a rival to The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion. ...you know, "work" simulator video games (like the forklift simulator you mentions) coming from Germany is such a meme here in Poland. You know, you come back from your work and to relax you... do the same thing you are relaxing from. Fitting for a nation that is considered to be so hard working. ...then again, Thief Simulator was created by a Polish studio, so maybe there's some truth to the stereotypes (at least it's not "Car thief simulator", haha)... We enjoy these type of games, too. Truck driving simulations were REALLY popular in my childhood years. Signalis was such an amazing experience... that I don't know what other to say. It touched me deeply. I was wondering if you will talk about Moorhuhn (finally I have official confirmation that my pronunciation of it was correct all along!), but then again... it would be REALLY weird if you didn't, no? It was a phenomenon after all. They were fun little distraction (most of them even included "boss key" - if you pressed it, the game "mimicked" Word (or some other utility program, depending on the game) to save you from being fired. My biggest issue with them was the fact that each one of them consisted only of a single screen. Sure, there were MANY secrets, but still, only a single screen and that was all. We had our own series - "Kurka Wodna" (Polish name for a subspecies of... well... moorhen. Bit... on the nose, and I love it), also known for its Wii version of the second game in the series- Chicken Shot. While the first game was a SHAMELESS ripoff of Moorhuhn, second and third ones greatly expanded on it. ...and was BEAUTIFULY hand drawn and animated. ...I couldn't believe it when, while browsing Amazon, I found PHYSICAL VERSIONS of Moorhuhn for PS5. I had to buy them all. It was just... too funny. I respect their hustle. ...ze Germans also made A LOT OF great strategy games. The original pre-UbiSoft "Die Siedler" (or "The Settlers) were OUTSTANDING. ...my favorite economic strategy, Pizza Connection 2, was also made in Germany. Also... Technomage. It was... interesting, but the artstyle really bothered me back then. Yup. Germans are THE KING of Eurojank. And I love it. ...what's funny is the fact that you touched on multiple themes that I plan to make videos of (mainly the "moorhuhn" series and "work" games) Thanks for reminding me that. It was a great video to enjoy my coffee too!

      The saddest thing is that Piranha Bytes is kinda in financial troubles and it would be tragic if they ever get shut down, even if they may have never reached the heights of Gothic 2 again. Almost as sad as what became of the Gothic franchise itself with that fourth game that just had the name plastered on it or the announced remake that has almost no real gameplay shown so far but hey, they already announced a 200€ Collector's Edition for it at least... I actually own Thief Simulator on the Switch because it was on sale for like 99 cents once but actually playing it on the Switch fills me with dread because I'm pretty sure it will run like poop... It's also kinda weird how simulator games like that changed in the last couple of years. Back in the day they felt like "real" games but now there's tons of those simulator games that feel more like they're just made to be a bit funny and memey so RUclipsrs/Streamers can play and make them big, like that recent Supermarket Simulator which is really lacking as an actual simulation. There's a simulator anything nowadays! The funniest thing about Moorhuhn is that it started as some kind of marketing campaign for an alcohol brand but just became its own thing so most people never even knew about the alcohol stuff so in one way they failed their mission but also succeeded at the same time! I actually played Chicken Shoot for my Wii video where I tried out the worst rated games on it because it had a Metacritic score of 27... (I talk really badly about it, sorry my Polish friends...) Sadly I just never got into games such as Die Siedler or the whole Pizza Tycoon, Pizza Connection, Dönermafia kind of games (They overwork my brain too much). And I think I got a bit tired of them since every single PC gaming magazine had those kind of games over and over on their DVDs and it made me mad they didn't put games that I personally would enjoy on them. How dare they put free games that other people enjoy onto their discs instead of only catering to me? >:(

      @@Vanserchan As for Piranha Bytes... being part of THQ Nordic/Embracer is a bit like a kiss of death. To be honest, the studio wasn't what it was since the release of the Night of the Raven. Still... it's a bit sad to see them go. At least we still have the originals, no? They're quite fun, even on Switch. Yeah, "Simulators" are a bit of a meme genre lately. I still admire the creativity of people making them! More often than not these aren't GREAT games... but at least its something new/novel, no? And hey, once in a while we get something like PowerWash Simulator, which is surprisingly great. I mean, porting Chicken Shot 2 to Wii was... a really curious decision, tbh. I haven't watch the video YET, but I've heard nightmare stories about its controls. ...its a precision (and quite tough) game made strictly for mouse-controls, so I can imagine it being pretty horrid. Nobody will take offense when the game is actually shit. ...they also made GBA port, which also is quite terrible, but was... weirdly ambitious TBH. I LOVE such unnecessary weird things. Strategy games were a dime-and-dozen back then and their licenses were probably pretty cheap. I liked them quite much though. Made me feel smarter than I actually was. ...and damn, I forgot to write about CrossCode! Such an amazing gem of a game. I didn't knew it was made in Germany! Nice to see that indie-game scene is still really strong there.

      @@Hodyna I used the Switch Remaster trailer for the video and when I watched it I saw that you can actually swing and shake the Joycons to do the combat with and that somehow really made me wanna play it, just to see if it works fine or... not so fine. I will also never forgive Embracer for giving me hopes of a new Timesplitters game just to crush that tiny bit of hope again by firing people and cancelling it... I mostly complained about the price of Chicken Shoot in the video, which also counts for Moorhuhn. As a freeware game they're pretty fun for a tiny bit but having to pay more than like 10 bucks for them? I would rather just spend it on... candy or something! Playing such a precise game on the GBA sound like a nightmare... I was also surprised when I learned about that it was made in Germany but it all made sense to me because only Germans could make a German character such as Lukas in the game!

      Aeria Games brought over loads of Free to Play games from the east which I played many of during my youth. Games like Shin Megami Tensei Imagine and Shaiya filled much of my highschool freetime.

      @@Smothtiger Nuh uh, me wanting to draw Nia in a Dirndl totally wasn't the reason why I made the video, I swear... I remember playing SMT Imagine for like 2 hours with a friend because we always tried out every single F2P MMO possible that we saw on MMOHut back in the day without even knowing what SMT is... (We kinda hated it but as a fan of the franchise it was probably great) I checked the other games they published here and saw S4 League and now I wanna go back in time because I miss that game so much, even if it was full of hackers. Would have included them if they actually made the games themselves!
